Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun - Brand new single ‘A Song About Death’

Tipped by the NME as one of the 100 bands to check out in 2012, Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun are to release their new single ‘A Song About Death’ rather fittingly on St. Valentine’s Day – 14th February 2012 – through Xtra Mile Recordings.

A passionate and frenetic track it highlights their incredible blend of country-folk and indie-punk that makes them one of the most poetic and engaging new bands in British music.
The single is accompanied by a short run of dates – with a full UK headline tour currently being booked for the whole of May. Details to come.

‘A Song About Death’ is taken from their forthcoming album, ‘Death’, due out in April 2012. Produced by Peter Miles (King Blues, Crazy Arm, Futures) ‘Death’ encapsulates the band’s vast sound into 11 tracks, as the young quartet draw from a plethora of influences including alt. country folk and hardcore punk. Coupled with a strong political ethic and a “play-till-you’re-dead” attitude ‘Death’ is an innovative and arresting record, crammed with hook-filled soaring harmonies, innovative rhythms and passionately honest lyrics.

It also features the track ‘Warriors’ which the band made available for free late last year.

In two short years these anarcho-anglo storytellers have incessantly toured the country, including as main support on Frank Turner’s February 2011 UK Tour plus shows alongside the likes of Mumford & Sons, Dry the River, Johnny Flynn, Alessi’s Ark and Pete Doherty. In the summer they also performed at numerous festivals such as the Big Chill, Beautiful Days, Wychwood and Y-Not, including a packed performance as headliners on the second stage at 2000trees.

With tours and festivals being confirmed and an ever growing fanbase eagerly awaiting the album, 2012 is going to be a fantastic year for this up and coming band.

Beans On Toast - All Art Is For Sale

English folk singer Beans on Toast stumbles into the art world with a mouthful of questions about what art means, what makes someone an artist and how much art should cost.

In his first real exhibition Beans has created 100 pieces of contemporary art, all individual numbered and individually priced.

The exhibition will be held in the underground cult gallery Flaxon Ptootch on Kentish Town High Street, known for its love of the moon, great pieces of art, expensive rum cocktails and forward thinking haircuts.

The exhibition will run for one month kicking of with a launch party on Thursday 9th February. Where Beans on Toast will play a full live set followed by his main man and tour DJ Mr Paul Sethi who will keep the party rolling for as long as the art world will let him. Everyone is welcome, its free entry but bring some money because all art is for sale.

CRAZY ARM MARCH MINI-TOUR 2012

Devonian roots-punk ensemble, Crazy Arm, embark on a short UK stint ‘The Leap Of Faith tour’ in March alongside good friends, Apologies I Have None and Great Cynics. They also hook up with Indiana US country singer, Austin Lucas, for a couple of shows, with Crazy Arm appearing as Austin's backing band on a number of songs.

The band’s second album, 'Union City Breath', was released in October last year. Much like its predecessor, 'Born To Ruin', it has been very well received nationwide and throughout mainland Europe by fans and critics alike. Produced and engineered by Peter Miles (The King Blues, The Computers, Sonic Boom Six), the album is a triumph of punk rock energy, alt. country vitality and rabble-rousing honesty.

Not easy to categorise, and all the better for it, Crazy Arm's sound is an accumulation of decades of influence and inspiration: rooted in hardcore/punk, ‘60s protest folk/country and Springsteen-esque classic rock’n’roll. They combine this with a grass-roots political overview that embraces anti-war, anti-fascist and pro-community activism.

Having ended 2011 supporting Funeral for a Friend and The Subways; STRAIGHT LINES are now ready to welcome in 2012 with the release of their new single ‘Half Gone’ and a UK tour with southern rockers Canterbury. Straight Lines spent much of last year writing and recording their second full length record ‘Freaks Like Us’ which is set for release in April. ‘Half Gone’ is the first single to be taken from the album being released on 13th February through Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, Against Me!, Far…).

As with the band’s first album, ‘Freaks Like Us’ was recorded by the band’s bassist and producer Todd Campbell. The single is an infections nugget fraught with frustration and passion that bridges the gap between the band’s debut album and their new material. ‘Half Gone’ will also feature the B-sides ‘Watch It Blow Away' and 'Half Gone (acoustic)'.

Chris T-T to tour in November & December with Franz Nicolay

The inspirational and prolific folk hero Chris T-T heads out on a far-reaching tour this month performing a variety of shows.

The majority of shows will be solo, performing songs from his extensive back catalogue spanning seven studio albums, including Capital and Love Is Not Rescue both released through Xtra Mile Recordings. For these dates Chris will be joined on tour by the exceptional accordion wielding Franz Nicolay, formally of The Hold Steady.

A creative powerhouse, Chris is also starting work on a follow-up album. Titled ‘The Battle of Clarkson's Lighthouse‘, it is being recorded with his band The Hoodrats and culminates with Jeremy Clarkson being thrown in the Irish Sea! It will be released next year with more information to come.

The dates follow the release of Hause’s debut solo album ‘Resolutions’ that came out on Xtra Mile Recordings in October. Recorded, produced, engineered and mixed by Pete Steinkopf (of The Bouncing Souls). Hause and a group of friends and family he compiled, dubbed The Empty Bottles Band, Hause created a perfectly crafted rock album with no genre restrictions and limitations that showcases his talents for writing catchy songs together with influences from singer/songwriters such as Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst.

Tracks such as the heartening ‘C’mon Kid’ and the somber ‘Melanin’ take on a new life with the help of Hause’s backing band, while fan favourite ‘Pray For Tucson’ is an acoustic number made even more beautiful with the assistance of a pedal steel guitar.

Since Hause started playing solo shows in 2009, he has shared the stage with a variety of artists such as Bob Mould, AFI, Frank Turner, Tim Barry (Avail), Jim Ward (At The Drive-In, Sparta), Tommy Stinson, Franz Nicolay, Chuck Ragan and Brian Fallon from Gaslight Anthem.

Mull Historical Society - Releases ‘City Awakenings’, the first new MHS album since 2005, on January 23rd on Xtra Mile Recordings

Intimate album preview dates in London and the Isle of Mull also confirmed

After releasing two critically albums – ‘The Water’ (2008) and ‘Island’ (2009) – under his own name, Colin MacIntyre marks the tenth anniversary of his debut album ‘Loss’ with the first Mull Historical Society album since 2005.

Titled ‘City Awakenings’, the album is MacIntyre’s first under a new deal with Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, I Am The Avalanche) and will be released on January 23rd.

Produced by the Grammy-winning Dom Morley (Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Grinderman), ‘City Awakenings’ features ten new MacIntyre compositions which offer a tribute to Glasgow, London and New York; the three cities which have most influenced the musician as an islander abroad. MacIntyre also co-produced the album closer ‘Thameslink (London's Burning)’, which he first performed on acoustic guitar at his father’s funeral (his father’s death inspired ‘Loss’).

“Cities have been an explosion of the senses to me,” says MacIntyre. “The songs are breezy pop, some are widescreen things, and some are more minimalist, punchy tales of finding yourself in the city, leaving them, arriving in them, burning them, living in them, and what its like for a child to see one of them for the first time. I remember that. They are mostly upbeat songs about people living their lives."

‘City Awakenings’ will be previewed with two intimate headline shows. MacIntyre will play a homecoming show at the Isle of Mull’s An Tobar Arts Centre in Tobermory on December 6th before returning to London for a gig at Bush Hall on December 8th. Recent months have seen a variety of fresh Mull Historical Society activity. STV recently named early MHS single ‘Watching Xanadu’ as one of the best fifteen Scottish tracks of the noughties in their series ‘Scotland’s Album’, MHS were confirmed to join Xtra Mile Recordings’ Rock Against The Riots gig at The Borderline and ‘Not Today’, a song from the ‘City Awakenings’ recording sessions, featured on volume three of the ‘Xtra Mile High Club’ compilation series.

In addition, MacIntyre has recently taken on a post to help lead the Scottish-based charity Mary’s Meals (www.marysmeals.com) in London and the south-east. “We feed children a daily meal in their place of education in the poorest communities of the world,” explains MacIntyre. “The charity began in 2002 with our founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow by feeding two-hundred children in Malawi and now feeds over 557,000 every day in sixteen countries across four continents, proving an escape route out of poverty. I’m proud to be associated with the charity and my recent visit to some of the projects in Malawi was a life-changing experience. Music broke down the communication barriers and I saw what an amazing difference this charity is making to lives, families and whole communities.”

If several months of touring the UK with Americas (Manchester Orchestra & Taking Back Sunday) and the UK’s (Young Guns) rock elite was not enough, THE XCERTS can now confirm a plethora of incredibly exciting news. The band’s frontman (Murray Macleod) will be heading to New York (where the band’s album ’Scatterbrain’ was recorded) next week to perform three showcase at CMJ including a special Xtra Mile Recordings label night at the Bowery Poetry Club where he will be joined by fellow label mates StringerBessant and Sophie Madeleine.

Upon Murray’s return to the UK The Xcerts will be joining the stellar line-up at this year’s Relentless Freeze Festival on Friday 28th October alongside The Streets and Pulled Apart by Horses before heading onto perform a special intimate FREE show at the Old Blue Last for the launch of their ‘Slackerpop’ EP on 21st November.

The Xcerts will see the year out with the release of a deluxe version of their second album ‘Scatterbrain’ in UK and Europe (Germany, Austria and Switzerland on 18th November and the rest of the world on 21st November). The release will also be followed by the band’s second European tour of the year in support of label mate and folk punk hero Frank Turner. Dates below.

An EP, titled 'Polymers are Forever' will be released on 14th November on Xtra Mile (Britain and Europe) with an initial small amount of imports being shoveled the way of the USA to be released on Xtra Mile US, that land mass which is a little to the left of Wales. Pleased doesn't quite cover it. The possibilities, literally, are end-ful.

Running order is 'polymers are forever', 'with apologies to emily pankhurst', 'new adventures', 'my wife is unhappy', 'dry hate' and 'destroywhitchurch.com'. It has a running time somewhere in the region of twenty one minutes and is 'very nice' ((c) my mother, last week).
The first three songs are taken from the album sessions (more of this later) whilst the final three are earlier demos we didn't have the time, money or inclination to re-record. At this stage I have no earthly idea if the EP will end up being pressed on vinyl but the chances, as ever, are dramatically increased the more people ask.

Just saying.

'polymers are forever' will appear on the album 'the plot against common sense', which will be released in early 2012. More about this later. We are really VERY VERY HAPPY with this record, which is perhaps ONE DAY away from being finished (whenever we can fit that in). I would like to apologise in advance to my bandmates and the cat for how drunk I get upon its completion.

Keeping with tradition between artist and label Xtra Mile Recordings will be releasing the new album by Beans On Toast on his birthday Thursday 1st December 2011.

‘Trying To Tell The Truth’ – his third studio album - is a no holds barred account of the world as Beans on Toast sees it. Painting pictures of everyday things and events with sharp observations and witty one-liner’s the album offers words of wisdom that are delivered with a mischievous smile.

Wearing his heart and his beliefs on his sleeve Beans unashamedly writes of love, on the banjo-ed powered love letter ‘My New Number One’; of his childhood in Southend-on-Sea on the heart-warming ‘Peter Pan’s Playground’ (which has already been played on Radio 2); and provides beautifully articulate social commentary on ‘Free Night Of Riots’ and ‘Can’t Take Another Earthquake’. All backed by the stripped down arrangement of acoustic guitar, harmonica, banjo and piano. Recruiting friends Frank Turner for production duties and poet Kate Tempest for a spot of guest vocals adds to the home-spun down to earth feel of the album.

Fans will be able to hear these new tracks for the first time when he takes to the stage at the Xtra Mile ‘Rock Against The Riots’ gig at the Borderline in London on 19th October. A label night of fun and folk which is part of the F**k The Fire campaign.

He celebrates the album’s release with a launch party held at The Yard in Hackney Wick, a temporary theatre space, converted from a dormant warehouse in the shadow of the of the olympic village, and then takes to the road in his first headline tour since the Spring.

Rounding off an exceptional year that has included headlining festivals, Main Stage sets at Reading and Leeds and a chart bothering album, Frank Turner will release his new single ‘Wessex Boy’ on 28th November through Xtra Mile Recordings. Frank Turner has also confirmed his biggest headline show to date at London’s Wembley Arena for April 2012.

The third single to be lifted from the Top 12 album ‘England Keep My Bones’ it encapsulates the album’s feeling of nostalgia, reminiscing about home towns and re-visiting cosy childhood memories after a long time away. And in some uncanny cosmic timing it provides the perfect soundtrack as the winter nights draw in and attention is turned to going home for Christmas.

Xtra Mile Recordings present ‘Rock Against The Riots’ – a celebration of our fantastic roster of acts that will offer friends, supporters and music lovers everywhere something truly special…

On the 19th October 2011 at London’s Borderline venue, 5 acts from our eclectic and inspiring stable will be performing intimate acoustic sets as well as meeting the fans that have helped support them and the label.

On the bill are long term family members Chris T-T and Beans on Toast as well as new signings Mull Historical Society, The Loved One and Kyle D Evans the frontman from Retrospective Soundtrack Players. There will be goody bags, an Xtra Mile merch stand and through the powers of technology we will be linking up with one of our cherished acts currently touring North America. The gig is part of Xtra Mile’s ‘F**k The Fire’ campaign, a project born out of the ashes of the summer’s London Riots. When a fire tore down the Sony DADC Warehouse that housed [PIAS], a large distributor of over 150 independent record labels, all Xtra Mile’s new releases, limited editions and back catalogue went up in flames. So we teamed up with our friends at PledgeMusic and formed an exciting direct-to-fan campaign.

Xtra Mile Recording’s new signings I Am The Avalanche will be coming over to the UK and Europe this December for an exciting headline tour.

It’s been over 5 years since the Brooklyn quintet made it across the pond to unleash their frenetic and passionate live show on the Great British public. Better late than never we think! The tour is in support of their long awaited second album ‘AVALANCHE UNITED’ released on Xtra Mile Recordings in October. It is the album fans have been waiting on for over six years. Vinnie Caruana (vocals), Brandon Swanson (guitar), Michael Ireland (guitar), Brett “The Ratt” Romnes (drums) and Kellen Robson (bass) formed I Am the Avalanche in the fall of 2004 and quickly released their debut self-titled album in 2005. They toured the world relentlessly in support of this album, which became a cult favorite among fans and the band’s peers, and with popularity and respect from the punk rock community through Caruana’s previous band The Movielife, IATA soon established their own intensely dedicated following around the globe.
In 2006, IATA began writing and demoing new music for their follow-up album. Despite the odd rare live performance they decided to return to their DIY roots and become self-managed, self-booked and almost completely on their own so they could be laser-focused on writing the best album of their careers.

Six years after the release of their debut album, IATA have returned with just that. Set for release on 10th October 2011, produced by the band, and executive produced and engineered by their prolific drummer Brett “The Ratt” Romnes and mixed by Machine (Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die, Four Year Strong), AVALANCHE UNITED is addictively melodic and blisteringly raw to its very core. We, at London based indie label Xtra Mile Recordings, are offering friends, supporters and music lovers everywhere the chance to participate in something truly special….

Home to Frank Turner, The Xcerts, Crazy Arm, Chris T-T, Jim Ward (former At The Drive-In and Sparta guitarist/songwriter), Dave Hause (The Loved Ones), Sophie Madeleine and previously Million Dead and Reuben to name just a few, we have an eclectic roster of hard working and inspiring acts that we are all very proud to be working with. However, during the London Riots in August we watched our stock go up in flames as a fire tore down the Sony DADC Warehouse that housed [PIAS], a large distributor of over 150 independent record labels. All in all, millions of pounds worth of stock from Independent labels turned to ashes, including all Xtra Mileʼs new releases, limited editions and back catalogue.

Not ones to choke on this misfortune though, we are turning this unfortunate state of affairs into a positive and together with our friends at PledgeMusic we have formed an exciting direct-to-fan campaign.

It is with great pride that Xtra Mile Recordings can reveal that the brilliant I Am The Avalanche have joined the label and will be releasing their long awaited second album ‘AVALANCHE UNITED’ in the Autumn.

Against Me! sign to Xtra Mile Recordings

It is with great pleasure to announce that Against Me! have signed to Xtra Mile Recordings for the UK and European territories.

The quartet from Gainesville, Florida will be releasing their fifth studio album ‘White Crosses’ on Oct. 31st, 2011 through the London based indie label and will be playing headline shows in Europe and the UK as well as supporting Frank Turner on his huge UK tour in November.

Singer Tom Gabel says: “We are very happy to announce that we are teaming up with Xtra Mile. Very excited to be a part of their family and looking forward to coming over to the UK and Europe this November."

The double disc album is a comprehensive and beautifully packaged piece of work. A 28-track collection, the first disc includes the original 10-song ‘White Crosses’ album featuring four bonus tracks that were all produced by Butch Vig and mixed by Alan Moulder. The second disc, titled ‘Black Crosses’, is a collection of alternate versions of the album tracks as well as other previously unreleased songs. Of the 14 self-produced Black Crosses songs, nine were recorded with drummer Warren Oakes at Goldentone Studios in Gainesville, FL shortly before he departed the band in Spring 2009. The other five acoustic songs were recorded at Crescendo Studios, also in Gainesville, in early 2010.

It will be released on 3xLP vinyl and 2xCD both presented in tri-fold packaging created by famed artist and designer Steak Mtn., including a 32-page lyric and art booklet. It will also be available as a digital bundle.

Additionally, the band recently released the music video for their new single “Because of the Shame.” Directed by Jason Thrasher, the video is the band’s personal and lively homage to Common Grounds, a Gainesville, FL, mainstay that recently closed its doors after 15 years of serving both the local and nationally touring music community. Coinciding with the release Against Me! will be touring extensively throughout UK and Europe. Having just spent the summer months performing on the Vans Warped Tour and on the road with Blink 182 and Rancid, they will be flying over to Europe for a headline tour with new label buddies Crazy Arm, before landing in the UK to head out with Frank Turner in November. The Xcerts - To release ‘Slackerpop’ on Flexi Disc and Specially Recorded Download EP on 31st October

Having recently announced forthcoming tours with Young Guns, Taking Back Sunday and Manchester Orchestra; THE XCERTS are now ready to reveal that they will be releasing single 'Slackerpop' in support of the shows on 31st October through Xtra Mile Recordings. The single will be available as a very limited edition Flexi Disc with each disc containing a unique download code to retrieve a specially recorded five track EP of stripped back recordings produced by Paul Steel and mastered by Ed Woods (Manic Street Preachers, Idlewild, Reuben...).

Flexi Disc’s are much like a standard vinyl record but made of a thin, flexible vinyl sheet designed to be playable on a normal phonograph turntable. They were popular in the 70’s & 80’s and used as a medium for magazines to give away music to their readers. The track listing for the free EP is as follows:

The highly acclaimed debut solo album from The Loved Ones vocalist/guitarist Dave Hause will be released in the UK through Xtra Mile Recordings on 19th September 2011.

Recorded, produced, engineered and mixed by Pete Steinkopf (of The Bouncing Souls), Hause and a group of friends and family he compiled, dubbed The Empty Bottles Band, have created a perfectly crafted rock album with no genre restrictions and limitations that brings his talents for writing catchy songs together with influences from singer/songwriters such as Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst.

Tracks such as the uplifting ‘C’mon Kid’ and the somber ‘Melanin’ take on a new life with the help of Hause’s backing band, while fan favourite ‘Pray For Tucson’ is an acoustic number made even more beautiful with the assistance of a pedal steel guitar.

Hause, who cut his teeth in the punk world as a former member of Paint It Black and remains the frontman and primary songwriter for The Loved Ones, will join fellow punk rock solo artists Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem) and Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) on the brilliantly inspiring Revival tour throughout UK and Europe.

Having just toured the UK with Charlie Simpson (Fightstar) performing a special stripped back acoustic set and taking the stage by storm at T in the Park, Hevy and Belladrum festivals THE XCERTS are now ready to announce that they will also be taking to the road with anthemia Brits Young Guns, rock stalwarts Taking Back Sunday and band favourites Manchester Orchestra.

Speaking of the dates frontman Murray Macleod has said: “We are delighted to announce we will be supporting Manchester Orchestra on their UK tour in October. We feel pretty honoured to be playing with a band we all admire greatly. The fact we are also touring with Taking Back Sunday and Young Guns beforehand is pretty mind blowing. We've worked exceedingly hard over the past couple of years and to be able to tour with (bigger) bands you respect/enjoy is fantastic. These shows will be our only UK dates this year so be sure to come out and have fun.”

Devon roots-punks, Crazy Arm, release their new single, 'Tribes', in August: the first release ahead of their imminent new album, 'Union City Breath'. A highlight of this live favourite, is a song of two distinct parts, combining the band's love of Springsteen, gospel and honest punk rock. The lyrics are an indictment of man-made structures of violence and a call for a return to simpler, more ethically-centred ways of interacting. Also on the record: the voice of Victoria Butterfield (who sang on the band's last single 'Sweet Storm') and keys courtesy Patrick James Pearson. The single will coincide with the band’s debut acoustic tour in August with Cory Branan and Sam Russo in August.

The follow-up to 2009’s dramatic debut, ‘Born To Ruin’ (‘Stunning’ KKKK Kerrang), 'Union City Breath' was produced/engineered once again by Peter Miles (King Blues, The Computers, Sonic Boom Six) at his new studio in the South Devon countryside. Taking its cue from the spurious idea of the Big Society, 'Union City Breath' is a reminder that all societies are made by people and can be changed or at least challenged by people whenever they see fit. The band will be touring the album throughout the UK in September, and are the main support to Against Me! on their European/UK tour in November.

Crazy Arm set up camp in mid-2006. Not easy to categorise, and all the better for it, their sound is an accumulation of decades of influence and inspiration: rooted in hardcore/punk, ‘60s protest folk/country and classic rock’n’roll, combined with a grass-roots political overview that embraces anti-war, anti-fascist and pro-community activism.

They have toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe many times, sharing stages with the likes of Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, The Xcerts, Bangers, Apologies I Have None, The Cut Ups, Two Cow Garage and Sonic Boom Six; and have made appearances at festivals including 2000 Trees, NASS, Leopallooza, Boardmasters, Reading and Leeds.

Frank Turner puts on free show in Newcastle after Ignition Festival is cancelled

In a statement Frank explains:

"I was due to play at Ignition Festival in Newcastle on Saturday. As most people have now heard, the festival has been cancelled. I have neither the knowledge nor the desire to get involved in arguments as to why; the guys at the festival were cool with me all through and are bitterly disappointed that it's not happening, that's all I know for sure. Whatever the case, that show isn't going ahead.

Naturally, me being me, I've been trying to sort out a replacement show for tomorrow in Newcastle. We now, finally, have a plan.

We (the Sleeping Souls and I) will be playing at the Newcastle O2 Academy tomorrow night. Doors will be at 7pm, and the show will run until 10.30. If you have an Ignition Festival ticket, entry will be free. Otherwise entry will be £10, tickets on the door. The venue is smaller than the festival, so it'll be first come, first served. The age limit is 14 +.

We've spent the last 24 hours going through a million permutations, trying to cover every aspect (age restrictions, time, location, venue size, ticket holders etc.) and this is, as far as anyone can tell, the best option. I'd like to say a special thanks to Paul and his staff at the Academy, Joanna (my booking agent) and Graham (my tour manager) for working their arses off to pull this together. I know it doesn't replace an outdoor festival, but I think it's a great effort for the last minute!

Incidentally, according to the Ignition Festival website, they will be refunding tickets, so keep hold of yours whether you can make it to the show or not, hopefully you'll get your money back. See you all tomorrow night."

Hot on the heels of his Main Stage appearance at Reading and Leeds Festival this August, Frank Turner will release his rabble rousing anthem, ‘If Ever I Stray’ on 29th August through Xtra Mile Recordings.

As his career soars further to the stars this is a wonderful ode to his friends and loved ones for the support they continue to show him on this incredible journey.

Bringing together his critically acclaimed EP trilogy, Xtra Mile Recordings’ new signing Jim Ward announces details of his brand new album ‘Quiet In The Valley, On The Shores The End Begins’ – out 1st August 2011.

Five years in the making, the complete trilogy creates a full-length album of his EPs ‘Quiet’ (2007), ‘In The Valley, On The Shores’ (2009 and 2011’s ‘The End Begins’. Recorded and produced by good friend and band mate Gabe Gonzalez in their own Clap of Thunder studio in their hometown of El Paso, Texas, it shows Ward’s talent for songwriting and class musicianship. The 14 track album holds an intricate instrumental, a heartfelt love song, a seven-minute narrative, and a sincere “thank you” to his long-standing fans as well as many other beautifully constructed acoustic folk music. It also includes lead track ‘Broken Songs’ – a stunning track featuring the stylish and poignant vocals of Tegan Quinn from acclaimed duo Tegan and Sarah.

The album is packaged with an incredible bonus CD of fantastically reworked electric versions of six of the tracks – the perfect stepping stone from Ward’s work in Sparta and Sleepercar.

It’s been quite a journey for Jim Ward. His musical career started in 1994 when he formed a band with his friend Cedric Bixler – that band was seminal post-hardcore band At The Drive-in. In the seven years they were together, they spearheaded a brand new genre of punk/hardcore and amassed worldwide fame and success. After they disbanded he went on to front Sparta and Sleepercar before settling into his solo work. In a career that has taken him all round the world, Ward’s driving work ethic and strong DIY attitude has propelled his creative output forward; continuously making music and touring the country with nothing more than his voice, an acoustic guitar and his true punk ideals. Never one to forget his roots, he has not only set up their own recording studio but opened a local bar with his wife and friends, and set up Tembloroso.com – an online shop he helped create to highlight El Paso’s local artists and musicians.

Ward’s contribution to music is far-reaching, spanning three decades and stretching across the world; and with this new chapter just about to unfold – his long legacy continues.

Xtra Mile Recording’s newest signing, Sophie Madeleine, announces details of her brand new album The Rhythm You Started which will be released on 25th July 2011.

An experimentation with rhythm, Madeleine’s second album is a refreshing mix of timeless folk-pop songwriting with an uplifting indie synth edge. The multi-instrumentalist seamlessly weaves percussion loops and drum machines together with ukulele, violin, and sweet vocal harmonies. This summery blend is tied together by her disarming vocal. Its feather-light vibrato complements vivid metaphors and hook-laden melodies.

After self-producing the ten-track album from her living room in Brighton, Sophie sought out the mixing expertise of esteemed producer Danton Supple. His previous credits include Coldplay, Thirteen Senses, Tenderfoot and Electric Soft Parade.

Before signing with Xtra Mile, Sophie sold out a limited run of The Rhythm You Started, personally mailing copies to fans in 27 countries on five continents. The forthcoming single, “Oil & Gold,” has already been played on Radio 2 by Steve Lamacq. She also recently supported Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon) at his headlining show at New York’s legendary Mercury Lounge.

Devon roots-punks, Crazy Arm, release their new single, 'Tribes/Animals', in August: the first release ahead of their imminent new album, 'Union City Breath'. Already a live favourite, 'Tribes/Animals', is a song of two distinct parts, combining the band's love of Springsteen, gospel and honest punk rock. The lyrics are an indictment of man-made structures of violence and a call for a return to simpler, more ethically-centred ways of interacting. Also on the record: the voice of Victoria Butterfield (who sang on the band's last single 'Sweet Storm') and keys courtesy Patrick James Pearson. The single will coincide with the band’s debut acoustic tour in August with Cory Branan and Sam Russo. All tour dates below.

The follow-up to 2009’s dramatic debut, ‘Born To Ruin’ (‘Stunning’ KKKK Kerrang; ‘Quite brilliant’ Rock Sound; ‘Storming roots-punk debut’ Big Cheese), 'Union City Breath' is currently in the finishing stages and is being produced/engineered, once again, by Peter Miles (King Blues, The Computers, Sonic Boom Six, Dry The River) at his new studio deep in the South Devon countryside. Taking its cue from the spurious idea of the Big Society, 'Union City Breath' is a reminder that all societies are made by people and can be changed or at least challenged by people whenever they see fit. The most authoritarian of institutions and the largest of multinational corporations are still only the product of human endeavour, propped up by other people with the same global interests – they can be, will be and are dismantled if and when they continue to pose a threat and cause violence upon ordinary people.

The band are due to play Shepherds Bush Empire with Social Distortion on 7th July amongst other shows and festival appearances including 2000 Trees and Boardmasters. The album will coincide with a comprehensive tour of the UK and mainland Europe.

Ben Marwood - New single ‘Singalong’ and Frank Turner support tour

Following on from the release of his debut album 'Outside There's A Curse' at the beginning of the year, Ben Marwood is now ready to lift the first single from the record. ‘Singalong’ will be released digitally through iTunes and all major digital music retailers on 2nd May through Xtra Mile Recordings (The Xcerts, Far, Frank Turner…).

‘Singlong’ does exactly what it says on the tin and has already proved an anthem for venues all over the county. In the lyrics to the song Ben sings "I guess I could be the next big thing, but that would just be weird. So I guess I'll play more Folk clubs, but I'd have to grow a beard”. The irony being that this track might well provide the step he needs to reach the next level.

Two years after the release of 'This Is Not What You Had Planned', the independent mini-album that grasped the attention of The Times, Artrocker, BBC Radio 1 & 2 and XFM, and following last year's 'Exclamation At Asterisk Hash' split with Oxygen Thief and Jim Lockey, 'Outside There's A Curse' firmly establishes Ben's coiled, lyrical style. Though the angst of 2008 lingers, along with the expected pop culture sideswipes and name-checking, it is complemented by a philosophical acceptance in the face of death ('Toil'), a will to make good on past mistakes ('I Will Breathe You In') and light-hearted jabs at his own shortcomings ('Oh My Days', recorded live in front of a studio audience of thirteen).

The Worlds first concept-country/folk band The Retrospective Soundtrack Players will be releasing their debut album ‘Cool Hand Luke’ on the 4th April through Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, Chris T-T, Far). The album is a creation of soundtracks created by the band to form various backdrops to their favourite cult films and books.

The Retrospective Soundtrack Players story is far from ordinary. Originally beginning as a two man concept project by two of indie-folk outfit The Dawn Chorus the duo won a competition through Xtra Mile Recordings website (www.xtramilerecordings.com) in August 2010 to have their track ‘Real Cool Hand’ featured as the B-side to (now label-mate) Frank Turner’s single ‘Try This At Home’. The success of the limited edition (and now highly collectable) split 7” was far greater than than the band anticipated and saw them being featured on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music before they had played any shows! Following on from the unexpected success chief songwriter Kyle Evans then began to gathered together a collective gaggle of musicians from the thriving Hampshire music scene – including members of The B of the Bang and All The Shapes and the 12-legged country/folk/punk beast The Retrospective Soundtrack Players was born!

The Xcerts join the bill of the huge Teenage Cancer Trust show at The Royal Albert Hall in support of Biffy Clyro

Having only just been swept off to Europe with cult stoner rockers Fu Manchu; THE XCERTS have now been added to the bill of a huge show at The Royal Albert Hall in support of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The band will perform on the third night (Wednesday 23 March) of the week long event alongside Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison (solo) and UK rock giants Biffy Clyro to form a trio of Scotland’s finest acts.

This year sees the 10th anniversary of the series of concerts which were the brainchild of Teenage Cancer Trust Patron and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey CBE. The shows have featured some of the world's biggest bands and artists and 2011’s line-up is not exception! Speaking of the show frontman Murray Macleod says “"I'm delighted to be able to play a show for the Teenage Cancer Trust. As a Crohn's disease sufferer I spent much of my teens in and out of hospital so I can only begin to imagine the heartache and suffering felt by families affected by a life threatening illness. It's an honour to be able to support such an amazing charity."

The Xcerts have just completed a highly successful jaunt in the UK where they were joined by Dinosaur Pile Up and Japanese Voyeurs as part of The Rock Sound Exposure Tour. Their brand new EP ‘Stairs To Noise: The Scatterbrain EP' was released last week on limited edition CD and download through Xtra Mile Recordings (Far, Frank Turner, Straight Lines...). Beans on Toast has been around the block and back. He's released two albums, and taken his musings to a various mix of stages big and small around the world.

Frank Turner: New Album – New Tour – Festival Appearances

After a busy few months of writing and recording tracks in a studio in North London, Frank Turner emerges with details of his forthcoming album, dates for an intimate UK solo tour and news of some very exciting summer festival appearances.
It’s going to be another exceptional year…

Folk/punk hero (and NME Award nominee for Best Solo Artist) Frank will release his highly anticipated fourth album ‘England Keep My Bones’ on 6th June 2011 through Xtra Mile Recordings for UK and Ireland and on 7th June 2011 through Epitaph Records for the rest of the world.
Recorded in Crouch End’s stunning Church Studios, Frank, together with his band and producer Tristan Ivemy has, as the name of the album suggests, created a record with the quintessential English sound Frank has been searching for.

Unsurprisingly, for an artist who spends the majority of his time travelling around the world, ‘England Keep My Bones’ has a nostalgic feel to it – an homage to his homeland, friends and family he so often has to leave behind. With the acoustic guitar very much at its core, the album is more folky than predecessor ‘Poetry Of The Deed’ and even includes an a cappella song done in a traditional English style. Featuring contributions from ex-Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay, folk singers Emily Barker and Chris T-T, and Unbelievable Truth’s Andy Yorke, he covers themes of mortality, relationships and religion in what is a bold, ballsy yet beautiful album.
Frank says:
"I can't wait to get this record out there. The new songs have been going down really well live, but I think that when people hear the studio versions they're going to go nuts. I think it's the strongest set of material I've had on one record."

He will be showcasing some of these tracks when he takes to the road for a special solo tour in May. Playing small and intimate venues up and down the country, this will be a fantastic chance to see Frank up close and personal before he spends the summer playing to vast crowds of festival go-ers all over the world.

Release new EP 'The Reflexes of the Dead', Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Pixies, Therapy?...) mixed album ‘The Heart String and How To Pull It’ and announce forthcoming tour dates

Scottish rock outfit SUCIOPERRO will be joining the Xtra Mile Recordings family (Far, Reuben, Frank Turner...) for the release of their forthcoming album ‘The Heart String & How To Pull It’. The album will be the trio’s third full-length record and it is to be released on the 7th March on CD and download. Not being a band who seem to suffer from writers block, ‘The Heart String & How To Pull It’ will be preceded by the release of a 6 track EP titled ‘Reflexes of the Dead’ a week earlier (28th February) with the title track from the EP also appearing on the full-length album.

As well as being highly prolific song writers Sucioperro are very familiar with the live circuit having toured with Hell Is for Heroes, Oceansize, Reuben, Brigade, Fightstar and Biffy Clyro in the past. The latter, are in fact good friends with the band with Biffy frontman Simon Neil and Sucioperro front man JP Reid coming together to form their alter-ego Marmaduke Duke.

‘The Heart String & How To Pull It’ was mixed by super-producer Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Pixies, Reuben, Therapy?...) and recorded at The Lair in Scotland. Speaking of the recording process frontman JP Reid says "It was the most relaxed and fun sessions I've ever been involved in. In fact everything went so smoothly it felt a bit strange because we're not used to it. Sheldon as ever was an absolute star at bringing out the best in the tracks and making it powerful. Credit also to Chris Gordon who also done an amazing job on the mastering. We really wanted to make a joyous and euphoric album, the opposite of (the band’s second record) ‘Pain Agency’. I guess for anyone into our darker side, some of it may be surprising but we weren't interested in treading ground we had already walked on. It's super important for us to keep taking risks and progressing."

Following on from the release of the singles ‘Slackerpop’, ‘Young (Belane)’ and their extremely well received second album (4/5 Kerrang, 5/5 Big Cheese, 8/10 Rock Sound) THE XCERTS will be departing from the standard single track release to bring fans the 'Stairs To Noise: The Scatterbrain EP'.

With the lead track ‘Scatterbrain’ being anything but a straight-down-the-line mainstream chart single it made sense to give the fans something different explains frontman Murray Macleod, “We had some tracks left over from the album sessions we did in New York that we really liked but didn’t work with the flow of the record so rather than just release another single, we decided to put these songs onto an EP along with a specially recorded cover Elliot Smith’s ‘Say Yes’ to sell at a reduced price as a reward for our fans loyalty.”

The 'Stairs To Noise: The Scatterbrain EP' will be released digitally on the 7th March through Xtra Mile Recordings (Far, Frank Turner, Straight Lines...).

Ben Marwood - Debut album 'Outside There's A Curse' to be released on 31st January 2011

Having ploughed the lo-fi folk-rock furrow since 2004, and along the way gathered support slots with Frank Turner, Chris T-T, Jonah Matranga and Get Cape, Wear Cape. Fly, twenty-odd songwriter Ben Marwood is set to furnish us with his debut album proper. 'Outside There's A Curse' will be released on Xtra Mile Recordings on 31st January 2011.

2010 has seen Ben experience ups followed by downs followed by ups - playing 2000Trees festival, his only guitar breaking on tour, supporting Frank Turner on his Reading and Leeds Festival warm up shows, recovering from unemployment only to find himself almost homeless. Still, Ben has continued to record songs wherever and whenever he could. Starting out 14 months ago on an 8-track portable studio before utilising the kindly nature of fellow songwriter Jay Newton, and his bedroom floor, this long-awaited collection of sardonic and honest acoustic-led tales is finally completed.

Two years after the release of 'This Is Not What You Had Planned', the independent mini-album that grasped the attention of The Times, Artrocker, BBC Radio 1 & 2 and XFM, and following last year's 'Exclamation At Asterisk Hash' split with Oxygen Thief and Jim Lockey, 'Outside There's A Curse' firmly establishes Ben's coiled, lyrical style. Though the angst of 2008 lingers, along with the expected pop culture sideswipes and name-checking, it is complemented by a philosophical acceptance in the face of death ('Toil'), a will to make good on past mistakes ('I Will Breathe You In') and light-hearted jabs at his own shortcomings ('Oh My Days', recorded live in front of a studio audience of thirteen).

Plymouth roots-punk quartet, Crazy Arm embark on a UK tour in December with London’s Apologies I Have None. To coincide with the tour, the band will be releasing a double A-side single (7” vinyl on Gunner Records, digital format on Xtra Mile Recordings). Featuring the Springsteen-esque anthem, ‘Ambertown’, and the bluegrass-influenced ‘Sweet Storm’ – with live guest, Victoria Butterfield, on joint vocals – the single is set for release on 13th December.

Crazy Arm have had a hectic 2010 that shows no signs of letting up. They toured for three weeks as support to Frank Turner (and Chuck Ragan) throughout the UK and mainland Europe; completed a label showcase tour with The Xcerts; embarked on two further weeklong jaunts to the continent including festival appearances in Belgium and Germany; and made appearances at 2000 Trees, NASS, Leopallooza, Reading and Leeds Festivals, amongst others. They are also booking a tour of Europe for mid-January 2011 with The Cut Ups.

Debut album, ‘Born To Ruin’, is out now on Xtra Mile Recordings (Gunner Records in Europe). The band are currently working on songs for their second album, provisionally titled ‘Union City Breath’, scheduled for release in mid-2011.

The Xcerts - Return triumphant from CMJ and announce headline tour

THE XCERTS have just returned from New York where they played two special CMJ industry showcases at packed out venues. No only did the band get to perform in the city where their new album ‘Scatterbrain’ was recorded, but were personally invited to see a secret performance by Bad Books in a secluded loft space in Brooklyn and got to hangout with Justin Beck of Glassjaw who continue to be a huge inspiration for the band.

The Xcerts new album has been extremely well received by the UK press with Big Cheese (5/5) calling it the "…comeback of the year", Kerrang! (4/5) saying the band have “become contenders on brilliant second album" while Rocksound (8/10) thought the record displayed "...songwriting chops that are matures beyond their relatively young years”.

Before 2010 is out, The Xcerts will find time to hit the road with Anberlin before heading out on their own headline tour of the UK bringing the sound of ‘Scatterbrain’ to a venue near you. Dates are as follows:

Second album 'Writing On The Wall' to be released on Wednesday 1st December through Xtra Mile Recordings

Never one to pay attention to rules or tradition, Beans On Toast will release the follow-up to his two disc 50 track debut 'Standing On A Chair' on his birthday, 1st December, eschewing the industry standard of records being released every Monday. It's called 'Writing on the Wall' and it's 30 minutes of music to celebrate his 30th year on the planet.

This time his distinctive vocals and battered, half size acoustic guitar is joined by a full band, bringing new dimensions to his core oeuvre of direct, poignant, hilarious tales and observations. Rooted in the confessional and anecdotal, Bean’s On Toast direct, three-chord approach is this time bolstered by a full array of instruments. They complement the already colourful wordplay and bring a new dimension to the melody of his songs, making his honest yarns of drugs, love and friendship larger-than-life.

After a summer in the fields going between the countries major and minor festivals, he's just completed the very first Strummerville tour 'Westway Around The UK' with a headline tour promised for early next year. Beans On Toast's grimy, scaly voice – lined with razor wire and sandpaper – continues to croak apace in its rather comforting, miscreant Jackanory way. And long may it do so.

Dive Dive - New single 'Liar' & Frank Turner support

New single 'Liar' out 29th November, long-awaited third album early January 2011, digital re-release of back catalogue.

Oxford-based quartet Dive Dive have reconvened in some inexplicable time out from their current job of being Frank Turner's band, dragging singer Jamie Stuart with them. They've also brought back with them their third, self-produced album, 'Potential' which is preceded by the single 'Liar', out 29th November on Xtra Mile Recordings.

'Liar' comes accompanied with a video that atones for the sins of leaving poor Jamie behind and leaving us without a Dive Dive record for so long. Guest starring the ever-present Frank Turner, Juju (of Little Fish) and Jamie Lenman (ex of Reuben), the video sees Tarrant Anderson, Ben Lloyd and Nigel Powell trying out frontmen from The Vocalist Warehouse. In the end, there's only one choice and it certainly isn't the man known for a fondness of folk music and beards.

Now, having had three years with three quarters of the band accompanying folk-rock trailblazer Frank Turner all over the world, their punchy post-hardcore has been refined and fuelled by a renewed desire to play together. As well as the release of 'Potential' next year, both of Dive Dive's previous albums will be available to buy from your favourite digital outlets on 29th November.

Since 2001, Dive Dive have been a growing concern. From their debut in 2005, 'Tilting At Windmills' came a barrage of positive press and fan adulation. The Independent, The Fly, Kerrang!, Rock Sound, BBC, NME and John Peel himself all fawned over their intial burst of high-octane energy. Their second album, 'Revenge of the Mechanical Dog', released in 2007, built upon their scathing riffs and stop-start dynamics.

Frank Turner - New EP 'Rock & Roll' Released 6th December on Xtra Mile Recordings

Following an incredible year of touring everywhere, playing to overflowing festival crowds, supporting Green Day at Wembley Stadium and winning a prestigious Kerrang! Award, Frank Turner has found a few days to record a five track EP in time for Christmas.

The 'Rock & Roll EP' begins with lead track, and astoundingly popular live anthem, 'I Still Believe'. It's a call to arms for those who are enraptured by the simplicity and power of “guitar and drums and desperate poetry”. The riotous gang of audience voices shouting the title back at Frank, spliced into the EP having been recorded from a summer of teeming festival crowds, tells you all you need to know about this soon-to-be signature song.

All recorded at The Church Studios in Crouch End in a mere three days, and produced by Tristan Ivemy who mixed Frank's second album Love Ire & Song, the four remaining songs 'Pass It Along', 'To Absent Friends', 'Rock & Roll Romance' and 'The Next Round' will remain exclusive to this release. 'I Still Believe' will appear on next year's anticipated album due for Spring with Frank set to begin recording in January.

The video to 'I Still Believe' sees a dashing bunch of 1920s-30s socialites witness Frank and his band (Ben, Tarrant, Matt and Nigel) stampede through the song in rip-roaring, devil-may-care style, as is their wont. Currently in the US touring with punk legends Social Distortion, Frank's neverending schedule continues with a December UK tour which has seen Sheffield, Aberdeen, Exeter and Liverpool sell out already, and the other dates not far behind, including London's Brixton Academy. His tour supports for December are singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt and fiery Oxford quartet Dive Dive.
